Sheron Cardin's Input...: Ellen DeGeneres Got Staged!

I have been an interior designer for over 27 years and I have always taught my clients the principles I used while decorating their home so they may enjoy decorating too. The home staging trend in residential real estate is a great way to reach more people every day and what I enjoy the most is they are learning the basics of good design through staging. It is my dream for every person to know the joy and pride of living in a decorated home.

Ellen DeGeneres Got Staged!

This article was in the Google Alerts for Home Stagers. How did we miss it?

I am decluttering my email today and just happened to open this alert from way back when and it is the best alert I have to date. What a great job that must have been for some lucky stager!  I'm available for this kind of project and I let them know.

Ellen's Montecito Mansion, Estate of the Day

Like Oprah, Ellen DeGeneres has a lavish Montecito getaway house but unlike Oprah, Ellen is on the move. She and her partner Portia Di Rossi have put their Montecito home on the market. This beautiful home was built in 1926 by George Washington Smith who designed many lovely homes in the Santa Barbara, Calif. area. The house was renovated a few years back before Ellen bought it less than six months ago. The estate has a four-bedroom main house that includes a 1,300-square-foot master suite, a dining room with a curved stairway, a wine cellar, billiards room, a library and an office. The property also has a guesthouse, a studio, a tennis court and a pool/spa. According to Berg Properties, Ellen also recently sold a 20-acre estate at 2710 Roundup Road in Santa Ynez, Calif., for $3,050,000 and sold a 119.8-acre agricultural property in Santa Ynez for an undisclosed price. Is the house worth $9 million more than it was just six months ago? Probably not but it's lovely just the same. The home is listed at $24 million. After the jump, check out the staging on the home: They set out lemonade in one shot and watermelon in one another.

I totally want some of that watermelon!  Nice house though!

Well Tony I can get you all the watermelon you can handle since I live in the agricultural capitol of the world, can you get me that house?

Beautifully done!!  I see there's the book and reading glasses at the bottom.  Too bad we can't all take a "field trip" to see it in person!!

Hmmm...very nice house, probably overpriced at $24 million even in Montecito, but I'm kind of disappointed in the staging.  I think most of us could do a bit better! I'd use bigger items and not so many small ones that don't photograph as well....it would add more drama.

Sheron, beautiful layout of your blog, nicely done.
Posted by Sue Argue, NH Home Stager (Staged First Impressions) about 12 years ago

Lori - Santa Barbara and the surrounding towns are wonderful places to visit so when you are ready...lets go find Oprah!

Maureen - You have a very critical eye...discerning...and important in this business. Always working, aren't you!

Sue - I would love to take credit for it but I did not stage it nor photograph it. I am just thrilled that Ellen's agent had it staged. Love California!

Nice place ... wonder why she's moving already.  Maybe Ellen got tired of Oprah coming over to borrow stuff all the time.  Did you see that episode that Oprah appeared on?  Ellen gave her a key.  Funny gal !

I love this house, I think I am getting "feelings" for Ellen.

Hi Sheron!

Nice diggs that Ellen has!  I wonder if there is such as thing as a photo-stager because it appears that's what they did!

On a different note you have inspired me to clean out my 650+ e-mails that are clogging up my yahoo account!

Have a great weekend!

What an amazing place...I don't even know if I would have picked up the "food" shots I was so caught up in the home!  I wonder why she's leaving....

Val: A "photo stager" is called a "photo stylist" in the trade. They usually rent the props from prop houses or local vendors for the day or the week, just for the shoot. They also buy or rent the live plants, orchids, etc. I did it for years, years ago. Staging is similar, but you have to cover more ground, not just what the camera sees.
Posted by Michelle Minch, Home Staging Los Angeles and Pasadena, CA (Moving Mountains Design Home Staging, Pasadena, CA) about 12 years ago

Sandi - sounds like she is selling everything in the area...darn, I missed that episode but I have them all Tivo'ed...do you have an idea of the date it aired?

Shell - move over! I could live there in a nano second or less.

Val - 650 huh? It is almost 9 pm, started this morning and am not close to being finished. I am determined but I look back at my day and what have I done? I am starting to ask myself; Self, if you never look back at those emails again, will you survive? Heck, I don't even know what is there except that I needed to keep them at the time. I wonder how brave I am? Hmmm

Carole - Did you know that "why" is an illusion based question with a million variations for answers? I will call you tomorrow! Where did the day go? Oh yeah, now I remember...nowhere!

Good luck Val! Oh, btw...will be getting my lucky cat soon...I doubt once I get it that I will be spending time decluttering...;p

Now I feel guilty.  Was going to do the lemonade thing today at my open house and then decided not to!

Lovely house!

What a beautiful home - what beautiful surroundings!  Shell & Sheron - move over!  I am there in a NYC sec which is faster than a nano second! lol!

Kelly - I just saw a recipe yesterday adding snow cone juice to lemonade and then fresh fruit like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries etc and then looked sooooo beautiful. That is what this house would require...along with a gorgeous butler serving them to us. I see your office is in Lake Forest...it has really changed there since the freeway is finished...what a nice ride. I decorated an agents home who worked for Coldwell Banker there in the big black glass building. I don't think they are there anymore. You are on lucky girl to live there! I always felt very fortunate.

Margaret - looks like there is room for all three of us.

Sheron, might have to try that lemonade, but it needs something a little stronger (ha, ha). Love South Orange County, I actually live in the area of Portola Hills, which is snuggled up against the Saddleback Mountains and is awesome.  I am blessed!

One of my girlfriends lives in Rancho Santa Margarita and I go there a couple of times a year. And every time I have to call her to get directions again. It is so confusing back there. Decorated a lot of homes around there when nothing was father that 10 minutes from Margarita Parkway. I was taking my usual shortcut from PCH through Dana Point to SJC and ended up in a huge resort last year. Can't believe how much it has grown. Still my little town of DP still calling me home. Thanks for stopping by...may look you up this summer when passing through to SD. We can all take a road trip to Santa Barbara and have a spa day just to break up the scenery...teehee.

WOW... but I gotta say when you have that kind of money that ain't staged... that is DECORATED and DESIGNED.

Craig, do you mean the lemonade wasn't really necessary to sell the estate? Nice to see you fluttering by.

Hmmmm, that looks so similar to my home...............NOT!

We can dream! Or go into show biz, or marry up? Oh, snap out of it Sheron and just decorate them! Who wants to clean all that woodwork!
Posted by Sheron Cardin, ARTIST - A Home Stager/Sellers Best Friend! (California Moods Inc) about 12 years ago

$24 million - thats all?  Gee, let me get my checkbook.

Although a beautiful home in a gorgeous area, I too am dissapointed in the Staging.  IMHO there is way too many knick-knacks and too much clutter & small pieces.  All I see is the stuff, not the house.

Hopefully Ellen will talk about it on TV!

Posted by Karen Reynolds (Champagne Staging, LLC) about 12 years ago
Sheron, the whole point of that house is that YOU don't clean it....it's why you have the maids, butler's and cooks..did I miss anyone???  Chauffeur...Hmmmmmm, what else?
Posted by Laura Cerrano, Certified Feng Shui Expert, Speaker & Researcher (Feng Shui Manhattan Long Island) about 12 years ago

Personal assistant, astrologer, Feng Shui expert, decorator, personal shopper, chef!

Karen - I don't know...I see right past the stuff with my lemonade and watermelon talking about how those vines have really grown this year.

Posted by Sheron Cardin, ARTIST - A Home Stager/Sellers Best Friend! (California Moods Inc) about 12 years ago

Wonderful blog. what a house!!! Oh My Sheron do you know if it sold and if did how much? I am sure it was the lemonade that did it! Or should I say - oh my they used faux food how did it every sell :)

Posted by Kym Hough, Staged to Sell East Bay - Danville, CA (www.Staged-to-Sell ) about 11 years ago

Kym - I don't know if it has sold. If I get a chance, I am sure I can find out. And the faux food and drinks, exactly, based on all the negative posts of late about the tackiness around using faux anything in a faux everything business...some people just run out of good things to say ;-)

Posted by Sheron Cardin, ARTIST - A Home Stager/Sellers Best Friend! (California Moods Inc) about 11 years ago

Good find!  I would have flown all the way from Charleston to help with that staging!  I LOVE Ellen (and her home is stunning)!

On another note, I think we are safe to use faux food if it is good enough for this posh pad.  I think that was a cake in the kitchen too....

The closest I have come to decorating for the rich and famous was Miss Arizona and for the author of Reganomics, although I did style Carol Burnetts wigs for her show ;-) It would be fun to put together a DREAM TEAM for the rich and famous...in and out leaving them razzled and dazzled!

Posted by Sheron Cardin, ARTIST - A Home Stager/Sellers Best Friend! (California Moods Inc) about 11 years ago

What a fabulous house.  I would love to know how much it sells for.  I would really love the opportunity to walk around the grounds in person...wouldn't that be exciting.

Posted by Sharon Tara, New Hampshire Home Stager (Sharon Tara Transformations) about 11 years ago

Very nice place and it should be for that price. I think I will pass on buying it - no stable for my horses!

Posted by Kathleen Lordbock, Keller Williams Realty Professionals (Keller Williams Realty Professionals) about 11 years ago

I have not heard that the home has sold...I will google alert Ellen and see what comes up. Thanks Diane, you are all over the net. I remember what people used to say that about me...congratulations.

Posted by Sheron Cardin, ARTIST - A Home Stager/Sellers Best Friend! (California Moods Inc) about 11 years ago

Thanks for the update if the house sold or not...I thought it did.  I Tivo Ellen daily, go onto youtube or her website and there is a great walk thru of the house by Ellen.  I do know she is pretty settled in her new place, also buying the home next door (for more land) and you can watch her actually demolishing this house. New House is SWEET!
