Sheron Cardin's Input...: "What You Blog About Matters" - I got the DREAM CALL and it was the wrong one :(

I have been an interior designer for over 27 years and I have always taught my clients the principles I used while decorating their home so they may enjoy decorating too. The home staging trend in residential real estate is a great way to reach more people every day and what I enjoy the most is they are learning the basics of good design through staging. It is my dream for every person to know the joy and pride of living in a decorated home.

"What You Blog About Matters" - I got the DREAM CALL and it was the wrong one :(

ChelseaActive Rain is not only is everywhere and everyone is getting wet. The search engines are flooding with Active Rain Blogs and I got my first big phone call yesterday!

So what is wrong? Nothing really...but a big lesson has been learned...and maybe some of you already know this but for those who don't...

Here is the lesson #1: You are what you write about!

  • If your posts are full of complaints, your name will pop up in the search engines when someone is looking for "The Biggest Complainer". If you want to whine and nag everyone to death with your bloging then before you know will be called to be on the Maury Povitch show.
  • If you post about food and recipes, Martha may be trying to reach you.
  • If you are the highest earning real estate agent in your city but you blog about kids and dogs, the SPCA will find your name at the top of the list when they are looking for a new regional director.
  • If you are an interior designer with an Internet business servicing the home staging community and you blog about feng shui, the Entertainment Network may call you to be on one of their shows.

The latter is what happened to me yesterday and the gentleman who called me was very disappointed when he learned that I was not a feng shui expert. He was just doing his job and he thought he had found a HOT LEAD when he Googled his query and Sheron Cardin was at the top of the list. Woohoo, he probably thought...and she lives in would be no big deal to have her fly down to Los Angeles and do a taping for a special segment of the Chelsea Lately Show.

If I WERE a feng shui expert yesterday, I would have been well on my way to living my dreams.

Active Rain members can become who ever they want to be...all they need to do is write about it. I have only written seven feng shui posts and I have caught a bubble to the top of the heap.

Lesson #2: Post in the language of your dreams!

I have had a lot of fun with feng shui and want to learn it all over the next few years but I am an Interior Designer/Decorator/Stager so if I want to live in MY DREAM, then I now know what to do!

Sheron - Goodness gracious girl..........go for it. If the NAR can put up someone and they are happy with the results, you too can appear on t.v., shoot from the hip and smile into the camera. I would tivo your show and replay it everytime storm clouds appeared on the horizon. I know nothing of Feng Shui but then my knowledge of famous asians is limited to Sun Tzu and Chairman Mao. I have no doubt that you could review Mr. Shui's accomplishments as well as anyone else. You never know, spending time on the show may lead to a big break. Remember Rachel Ray was just a happy camper doing a grocery store infomercial when the Food Network "discovered" her.

Wow I'm gonna start blogging about selling multi-million dollar homes ASAP. I'd love to rise to the top of that search.

It's so true. Search engines pick up your key words, whether labeled or not. We've often had calls from people who were searching "granite countertops" or who wanted a job with a business we blogged about.

Sheron, Great Point! I read a wide variety of posts here on the rain. Some are negative complaining or criticizing others, but I have always thought to myself I will never do that or comment on them. In other words, I didn't want to be guilty by association. You have summed up my reasons why, plus you have given me some great ideas on how to reach the consumer areas with the public side of blogging. Thanks!

Yeah Sheron, I noticed that people can view all our comments posted on other people's blogs.  I hope they don't spend too much time reading some of mine :-)

Several years ago, I attended a seminar that taught you to pick a niche and work it.  So I did. Only now, I'm known for ONLY that niche when in reality, what I do best is a much broader niche. I did the same thing when I found the rain - I posted mostly about my niche, not realizing the effect I'd have.  Lesson learned for sure!!  Great post!!

Sheron -- thx for sharing this good info.  I am one that is known for "choosing" my words carefully.  I think it's even more important when one is writing.

That is so amazing that you got that call.  So I am dying to know, did you refer them to Carole Provenzale?

Whoa!  Sheron!  That will snap us all back to reality!

I think I will focus more on vacants and less on wallpaper removal. LOL!!

You are irresistable - I know you will get the real dream call soon!

Talk about manifesting what you think (and blog) about!  :)  Okay Sheron, is it time to start blogging and thinking "Do it Yourself"?

You rock!...I bet yours is coming soon!

Sheron, Thanks for your call last night to let me know!  Entertainment tonight, I think you should have went for it but it sure is exciting.  Betty, that's a really sweet thing to say but they were looking for someone in California.  New York should catch up soon, we somehow always follow California on these things.  Well, back to some Feng Shui posts.....:)

Sheron, I'm sorry this wasn't your big break.  But you have posted a good blog that we can all learn from.  Your time will come...Betty

Now I have to go back and look at all my key words - & some of them were directed at poor James - at least I never did a blog about absolutely nothing.

Sheron - you know they will want you someday for just being Sheron the Designer/Decorator/Stager

Hi everyone...I am back from a wonderful weekend in a small mountain resort town called Jackson for a fabulous wine tasting festival and loved finding all your comments on my return.

It is a wake up call to me and all of us. Sometimes when I post or comment I feel like it is just US! I appreciate all the confidence everyone has for me and IF and WHEN I get that call I will be sure to mention all of YOU!

I just want to let everyone know that since that phone call from the Chelsea Lately show, I have been watching it and all I can say is "Thank goodness I did not fake it, she would have torn me to shreds"! Does anyone watch that show?

Hi Sheron,

I had not seen this post before - and it is a great one to keep in mind.  Chelsea does have a wicked streak - I have not seen an entire show - just blurbs but she pulls no punches.

We do get opportunities that may take us out of our normal comfort zone - I had an HGTV reporter call me about changing a house from summer to winter - the tips I would give to a homeowner. After clearly explaining that I am a Stager and do not focus on design or decorating, the reporter insisted she wanted to interview ME and fired away with her questions.  Here is the link to the article.  I don't think I did too badly - I was driving at the time of the interview and just shared what made sense to me (and what I have done in my own home!).

Feng shui expert or not - you would have been a great guest!

Jennie - delicious article. Did you find the columnist quoted you correctly? I was interviewed recently via phone and she did not get it right with me. Everything she said was incomplete and twisted. The article was syndicated and she is a popular columnist and it has been published mucho times and is STILL being picked up so that is nice.  What is really funny is Terry B. Clark of AR fame was interviewed for the same article.

How fun to have HGTV provide the awesome photo's in the article. You did a stellar job in your suggestions. An interior designer would have gone on forever and throw theory everywhere, leaving everyone saying "What?".
