Sheron Cardin's Input...: Never Too Old to Learn a Lesson the Hard Way!

I have been an interior designer for over 27 years and I have always taught my clients the principles I used while decorating their home so they may enjoy decorating too. The home staging trend in residential real estate is a great way to reach more people every day and what I enjoy the most is they are learning the basics of good design through staging. It is my dream for every person to know the joy and pride of living in a decorated home.

Never Too Old to Learn a Lesson the Hard Way!

clouds

When I first began posting in Active Rain a little over a year ago, I had just spent a year learning how to optimize my web site so explicit keywords were clearly an important step in my mind. What I didn't know or realize was the long list it would create down the side of my blog.

Sometimes I get so focused I miss the obvious...my list of tag clouds goes on for a mile (as you can see below) and it just occurred to me that it is so long it goes way past most of my posts comments...way past.

Knowing this was not a good thing for me or anyone else,  I dug in and spent a good hour or so condensing tags on past posts yet I haven't made a dent. I hate learning the hard way!

This is what I am talking about:

See all the (1) tags? These are not necessary. I didn't realize that I would also forget what keywords I used for my posts past the obvious home staging, home stagers, decorating tips, as though I would scroll down to read 'Spring' and know which post that was!

So to save you the time wasting steps of opening each post and deleting most of the keywords, I offer you this advice:

Group your posts into just a few categories and when you need to find a particular post you can look on your Statistics Page found on the lower left side of your home page.

Another tip - if you want to use several keywords in your post for Google Alerts, you can always delete the excess once your comments slow down a few days later. Well, you know where I will be for the next few hours, days?

Hi Shirley - your tags are organized already. That is my goal. I just visited your blog and what a beautiful story about your mother...thanks for stopping by.

Sheron - Karen George had a blog on this subject a while back.  I'll try and find it for you.

Sheron, Good info.  I believe I also read Karen's post but did not make sense of it at the time.  I know the day is coming soon where I will have to list and categories all my post for past references.  I do not look forward to doing that. AJ

Kathy - too late...apparently I didn't read it but maybe the newbies and oldies like me who missed it will read this one. Your tags look great!
Posted by Sheron Cardin, ARTIST - A Home Stager/Sellers Best Friend! (California Moods Inc) almost 12 years ago
Wow, yours is pretty long...but mine just might be longer.  Thanks for the reminder. This is a good thing to do while sitting at an Open House if there's wireless.  I think cleaning this up will be a big job that I'm not looking forward to, but need to do.

Alan - your tags look good. You won't have the problem I am facing. BTW, I love Lafayette!

Well, thanks for the lesson.  I haven't been putting any tags on my blogs.  Oops.  Guess I need to start doing that.  Like your post says ... Never too old to learn.  LOL

I decided I wasn't going to use tags for a few months until I got my feet wet.  Thanks for helping back up that thought.

Sheron,

So there is another thing to consider while choosing your Keywords besides just the long tail. Here is an example.

If you sell Hotdogs, and you choose a keyword for your post like Umbrella to describe your post about eating Hotdogs in the rain, and then you write another post about Sunsreen and you choose Sunsreen as your keyword for the post about eating hotdogs in the sun, you will begin to dilute the message of your blog.

When the search engines begin searching for relavant sites about Hotdogs they will be semi confused by the keyword refrences to Umbrellas and Sunscreen.

The next thing to think about when cleaning up the long tail is about Member Only Posts. Not thinking when I first started I did as you did and I even included the keywords in members only posts which are only viewable by members only.

So I went back through all of my posts and eliminated all of the keywords and replaced it with "members Only" as my keyword for those members only posts.

I can now search my posts using my keywords in the right side margin that are members only.

Took me about 6 hours the first time to get rid of 65% of my poor keyword choices on my past posts. Soon I will be trying to update again. I would love to get my long tail of keywords down to about 25 or less.

Sheron - Sometimes I think you and I do the mind meld without knowing it!  I was looking at the same thing the other day and thinking 'Why do I have so many 1's?'  I also realized that some are actually multiples, but I missed some typos.  Got work to do....

Kimberly - great minds are always willing to learn :0  I am not surprised about us...it has been happening for some time now.

Sheron: This is a topic that I've often wondered about.  I am pretty new to AR, so I don't have too much cleaning up to do, but I'll get right on it.

This may be the first time I've NOT had to learn something the hard way.

Hi Joni! Geez I am happy you have returned in one piece and your computer? This Chinese new Year stuff has come on with a bang. As long as your daughter is unharmed, lessons are being learned at the speed of light.

Diane - at least we (who have read this post) are doing it together :)

Sandra - you are one of the fortunate ones...congratulations.

Maureen - a few at a time is the way to go...that is about all I can handle before I forget where I am.

Kim - you and Sandra are the smart ones...I would have never paid attention to this post early on. I didn't know what a cloud was until I was six months into it. I thought I was just entering keywords for the search engines.  Not kidding!

Colleen - exactly, me too!

Carole - there is clutter all over the Universe...will we ever be done?

I think my list is longer than yours, I've always hated this too, I wondered if there was a way to just delete them.

Oh boy. This may be a task much akin to scraping beach sand off one's feet one grain at a time. Is it doable? Tell me it won't be a month long project! Good Post Sheron!
Posted by Yvonne Root, Home Stager - Northern Arizona (rooms b.y. root) almost 12 years ago

Cindy - that's hysterical!!! Yours IS longer than mine...how funny/sad. I will be thinking of you as I remove keywords one by one, post by post ;..(

Yvonne - okay, it won't be a month long project...it won't be a month long project...it won't be a month long project. How's that!

OMG this is so grueling! I have finished the first page of many in my statistics...I am only good for one a day! The list doesn't look like it has shrunk at all either...ugh.

I try really hard to stick with a set number of tags.  I read a post about that a few weeks ago and, since then, have tried not to go overboard with them. The reminder is always nice, though!

Thanks Sheron!  I was just looking at mine today and wondering what I am supposed to be doing that I am SURE I am not doing. LOL!  Sometimes, the technologies of the do's and do not's cram my brain full of too many details!  I will try and figure out what to do before I blog much more...thankfully, I do not have a long list....yet!  Thanks to your blog, my list will be better organized!  : )  Regards-Kathleen G

Abby - your tags are very organized and you have some great promotional gizmo's too.

Kathleen - you have nothing to worry about and what happens to those details in your head is amazing!

Renae - I was a few weeks younger when someone else offered this advice and if I had seen it, it wouldn't have been such a 'hard lesson'. ;0

Woohoo, I finished my tag/cloud decluttering and am thrilled. Some were posted to a group and I cannot change the keyword but other than that, the list is way shorter. I do look at tags in other blogs to see what that blogger likes to talk about, now mine will be easier to read. Thanks for listening and sharing your thoughts :) Now check it out...
