Sheron Cardin's Input...: The gift of understanding box.

I have been an interior designer for over 27 years and I have always taught my clients the principles I used while decorating their home so they may enjoy decorating too. The home staging trend in residential real estate is a great way to reach more people every day and what I enjoy the most is they are learning the basics of good design through staging. It is my dream for every person to know the joy and pride of living in a decorated home.

The gift of understanding box.

   BOX                              B                              BOX

Jeff Turner has such a way with words and now the refrigerator? As I am reading his delicious post and comments I thought I would go visit my refrigerator and see what wisdom my family holds dear. I won't go into my list here but what happened to me on the way to the kitchen I will share.

What is the very first thing a home stager or real estate agent has their clients do? "The first thing you have to do is take everything off your refrigerator!" Right? OMG - we are hitting below the belt when we call the memories and schedules and fingerpainted crumpled paper and grocery list's JUNK or CLUTTER or MESS.

Our lives run smoothly becuase of the refrigerator art, don't they. I would resist someone coming into my home and tell me to clear it off. What would I do with all my important stuff, and my cherished memories, and the homework schedule?

That is when it occured to me to do something thoughtful for our clients. Bring gifts! Bring a special offering on your consultation be it a box that you have made with your logo on it, or a decorative box you have purchased for a few dollars at the local Pier-1, you can give your clients a meaninful, thoughtful, caring box for their precious family posessions. THANK YOU AGAIN JEFF!

Sheron -- I love this idea!  I have never brought a gift to any of my clients but I know some stagers do.  I have been giving the idea some thought but couldn't figure out the right gift or the right way to present it.  Voila'...problem solved!!!  Now I can't wait to go shopping...Pier 1, here I come!

Thanks for sharing this brainstorm with us.

Sheron, this is a great one!  I think we will do one and that will be our signature item!  Great way to stage it forward

This is such a better approach to have them remove all the clutter there just did it last week without a box but how special this will be to do this from now on.  I don't know anyone doing it now.

VERY VERY VERY Clever idea!

This is a small example of all that is GOOD about Active Rain.

Thanks Sharon... I needed to smile in the storm called Active Rain.

What a great way to show your clients that you understand how precious their refrigerater memories are, but at the same time break it to them that they need to be put away.  Great idea!!

I love it!  I haven't had to tell clients to clear the fridge off yet BUT if I do I now know a smoother approach to getting it done.  :)

Craig - Amen and Amen! Love, Peace, and happiness.

Question...why does fridge have a d in it and refrigerator doesn't?

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Gina and can thank Jeff Turner for pointing out our connection to our refrigerators. He took an ordinary daily experience and turned (TURNER?) it into a heart felt experience for me and being the creative person that I am...I TURNED it and used it.

I like your idea, Sheron.  I might want to take it one step further and provide the family with a good-sized wicker or rattan basket in which they could place all of those important papers as well as mail and items needed on a daily basis.

The basket could become the family 'command post' during the interim while the house is on the market, and could easily be placed under a cabinet, desk, or in a closet.

Once they understand the concept behind keeping needed items in one place and in a manner that can easily be stashed away at a moment's notice, they can repeat that throughout the house.

Love it Val...craft stores have really nice baskets with lids on them in color fabric like stripes etc. So each member could have their own. I buy them for my granddaughter at 60% off which is really fun.

I could have sworn I already commented on this post? Guess not :)

Sorry, something else must have come up while I was playing in the rain.

Anyway, I like this idea. I will pass it on to my peers perhaps it will help them talk Seller's into getting their life off the refrigerator :)

Bingo! Checking out (good way of putting that) with the PASSION.

Sorry, that's just a little game I play with my passionate human fruit test :)

I just sent my monthly newsletter and included this box idea as a good way to pass on the Green Thing by purchasing a box and filling it with energy efficient light bulbs in them as Realtor gifts. I know we talked about them being less effective in lighting staged spaces but we still need to use them.
